Google “crawls” (AKA reads) as many pages on the Internet as possible. When it reads them, it looks for things like “keywords” (more on that in a minute) to help it figure out what your website is about.

Google can actually crawl 30 trillion web pages over 100 billion times every month.

Then, it uses the information to, in a sense, categorize your website and its pages.

Once these pages and your overall site have been categorized, they are officially eligible to show up in the search engine results of people who are searching for information and products related to your website.

The more indexed pages that your website has, the more likely it is to show up in relevant search engine results and drive web traffic.

Understanding Keywords

Let’s define another essential term when it comes to search engine marketing: keywords.

SEO keywords are the words and phrases in your web content that make it possible for people to find your site via search engines. A website that is optimized for search engines uses the words its potential visitors will likely type into a search engine to match their search with relevant content.

As simply as possible, keywords are the words and phrases that you type into your search engine when you’re looking for something. They can relate to your location, a specific product, a question you have, or pretty much anything else.

Keywords are used in searches conducted on your smartphone or mobile devices, and of course, on your desktop computer.

For example, if you’re looking for a new handbag, you might type in “best purse stores near me” or “handbag trends 2018.” These are the keywords.

These keywords are what can help you to end up as close to the first page of search engine results as is possible.

But how do you find out which keywords to use?

It’s not about writing the same words over and over again (at least not anymore).
